Gujarati Handvo Recipe: A Traditional Indian Breakfast
Handvo is a traditional, savory cake from Gujarat, perfect for breakfast or as a healthy snack. This protein-rich dish is made from a blend of rice, lentils, and vegetables, offering both taste and nutrition. Here’s how to make this delightful Gujarati Handvo recipe at home.

Ingredients:
1 cup rice
½ cup chana dal (Bengal gram lentils)
¼ cup urad dal (split black lentils)
¼ cup toor dal (pigeon peas)
1 cup grated bottle gourd (lauki)
1 tbsp ginger-green chili paste
½ tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chili powder
½ tsp mustard seeds
½ tsp sesame seeds
1 tsp baking soda
Salt to taste
Oil for tempering
Instructions:
Soak and Grind: Soak rice and dals for 6-8 hours. Grind them into a coarse paste with some water.
Fermentation: Allow the batter to ferment overnight or for 8 hours.
Mix Vegetables and Spices: Add grated bottle gourd, ginger-chili paste, turmeric, red chili powder, and salt to the batter. Mix well.
Prepare Tempering: Heat oil, add mustard and sesame seeds, then pour this over the batter.
Cooking: Pour the batter into a greased pan, sprinkle sesame seeds, and bake at 180°C for 30-40 minutes or until golden and crisp.
